How to host a watch party: a simple checklist

A good watch party feels effortless to the people who join it. This checklist covers what the host does before, during and after the night.

Updated: August 20, 2024

Before the night

  • Pick the title and the time. Ask your friends once, then decide. Too many votes slow everything down.
  • Keep the guest list to 7. An OurBeam room holds 8 people including you.
  • Ask everyone to install the app early. Send them the download page a day ahead, so a Windows warning doesn’t eat the first twenty minutes.
  • Make sure everyone can watch it. Each person needs their own access to the film or show.

Set up the room

  1. Open OurBeam and create a room a few minutes early.
  2. Check your own camera and microphone.
  3. Share the invite link, or the 6-digit code for the join page.
  4. Greet people as they take their seats and say who is still missing.

During the watch party

  • Wait until everyone is in before you press play.
  • Remind people that playback is shared: when anyone pauses or skips, the whole room stops or jumps with them.
  • Suggest muting the mic during dialogue and unmuting for reactions.
  • For anything longer than two hours, call a short break so nobody drifts away.

After the credits

  • Keep the room open for a few minutes. The best conversations happen right after the ending.
  • Ask what to watch next and note the answer.
  • Pin down the next date before people leave.

Keep it small on purpose

Eight seats is a feature. A small room feels like your living room, not a crowd, and you know everyone there. If more friends want in, start a second room and watch the same film in both. New to the app? Read the guide to watching movies with friends on Windows.
