Camera and mic setup for watch parties

Camera and mic are what make a watch party feel like a shared room. A few small habits keep the sound clean and the picture friendly.

Start with headphones

The most common watch party problem is echo: the film plays through your speakers, your microphone picks it up and your friends hear it twice. Headphones or a headset fix it completely, and they let you turn the film up without bothering anyone.

Check the Windows permissions

If a friend can’t hear or see you, Windows may be blocking the app.

  • Windows 11: open Settings, then Privacy & security, then Camera and Microphone.
  • Windows 10: open Settings, then Privacy, then Camera and Microphone.
  • Make sure access is on for apps, and that the desktop apps switch is on too.

Light and framing

  • Put the main light in front of you, not behind. A lamp beside your screen is enough.
  • Raise the camera to eye level if you can.
  • Dim your screen a little in a dark room. A bright film can wash out your face.

Mic manners

  • Mute while you eat or type.
  • Mute during dialogue, unmute for reactions.
  • If you need to talk during a scene, keep it short or use the room chat.

Joining without camera or mic

You don’t have to turn them on. OurBeam lets you join with both switched off and just watch, and you can turn each one on or off at any time during the party.

Who can see you

Only the people in the room with you, and only while your camera is on. Read the Privacy Policy for details, and the FAQ for more answers.
